Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages department activities to design new products, modify existing designs, improve production techniques, and develop test procedures.
  • Resolves problems using solutions that involve new techniques, technologies, or concepts.
  • Analyzes technology trends, human resource needs, and market demand to plan projects.
  • Confers with management, production, and marketing staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products.
  • Forecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests.
  • Advises management of new developments which may affect profit, schedule, costs, customer relations, and/or inter-departmental relations.
  • Provides direction and example for interpretation and application of company policies and procedures to the engineering activities.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations, and develops recommendations accordingly.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Supervises up to 10 employees in the Engineering/R&D Department directly along with multiple indirect reports. Is responsible for the overall management, coordination, and evaluation of these units.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Effectively speaks, writes and presents clearly with persuasion. Receives ideas, information and direction (both oral and written) positively.  Seeks to clarify and confirm understanding if any instructions or terms are unfamiliar or vague.  Maintains confidentiality.
  • Develops relationships with assigned departments/divisions/customers/vendors; understands and responds to customer needs; displays positive posture and attitude when dealing with others, regardless of their diverse background, level, or status. 
  • Identifies problems and causes; analyzes and generates best alternative solutions; makes timely, sound and appropriate decisions even under conditions of risk and uncertainty. 
  • Establishes constructive work relations; fosters team spirit; builds support and alliances between and among departments/divisions; recognizes competing needs and gains agreement based on common goals; actively participates in team meetings and projects.
  • Maintains self-direction and self-pacing; makes practical suggestions without being asked, and carries out effective solutions. 
  • Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to carry out job responsibilities in an effective and timely manner. 
  • Establishes appropriate priorities and completes assignments efficiently; identifies goals and means to achieve them; selects relevant activities and eliminates ineffective processes. 
  • Provide consistent performance in meeting deadlines; follows schedules and procedures. Is consistently at work and on time; ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent. 
  • Organizes tasks in an efficient manner; sets goals and deadlines; develops strategies; anticipates obstacles and defines alternative strategies.
  • Observes safety and security procedures, using equipment and materials properly.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Engineering; and four year’s related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Preferred degree in electrical or mechanical engineering background. 
  •  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  •  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  •  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. 
  •  To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of  MS Project, Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
